The body’s sweating process is completely natural: however, in areas with a greater number of glands, this phenomenon can be excessive, giving rise to manifestations that create embarrassment and discomfort.
Hyperhidrosis can affect different areas of the body, from thepalms of the hands(palmar hyperhidrosis) to the feet, but in this guide we will cover everything about axillary hyperhidrosis, from causes to possible remedies.
Causes, symptoms and remedies of excessive underarm sweating
How not to make armpits sweat? From triggers of the disorder to botox solutions, here’s what you need to know about axillary hyperhidrosis.
Armpits and excessive sweating: causes
The first aspect to consider when discussing underarm hyperhidrosis refers to the possible causes of this phenomenon.
As we mentioned, hyperhidrosis consists of a sweating disorder, which is definitely above the parameters considered “normal.”
Sweat is a completely natural phenomenon for our body: through it, we can eliminate water and waste from metabolic processes, regulating body temperature. To fulfill this function, the body relies on the sweat glands, which are evenly distributed throughout the skin surface.
If, under normal conditions, sweat is produced during fever, hot environments, physical exertion, and stressful conditions, in hyperhidrosis this is produced at any time, causing phenomena such as underarm sweating even in winter.
Regarding the causes of axillary hyperhidrosis, it can be classified into:
- Primary, when an organic cause causing it cannot be identified;
- Secondary, if excessive underarm sweating is related to other diseases or conditions such as obesity, hormonal imbalances, hyperthyroidism, central nervous system alteration, or spinal cord problems.
Symptoms
The symptoms and manifestations of axillary hyperhidrosis can cause discomfort and embarrassment in the sufferer, which inevitably affects the individual’s intimate and private life.
Excessive sweating, in fact, is clearly visible with extensive halos on clothes at the level of the armpits. In addition, due to chemical degradation carried out by yeasts and bacteria, the phenomenon of “sour sweat” is commonplace, causing an acrid, pungent odor.
Prevention and expedients
How not to sweat excessively? To prevent this disorder, it is good to take care of one’s personal hygiene, using anti-allergic and antibacterial products to control sweat and odor.
A valuable aid to axillary hyperhidrosis is hair removal from the area, as the presence of hair facilitates the formation of the bacteria that cause the thick, acrid odor.
In some cases, it is also helpful to use underarm antiperspirants, applied after normal cleansing.
Regarding clothing:
- Always wear clean clothes, especially after working out at the gym;
- Favor linen and cotton and avoid synthetics, which feed perspiration.
Remedies: botox treatment
Speaking of axillary hyperhidrosis remedies, botox treatment is one of the most suitable for the purpose.
To treatexcessive underarm sweat, grandmother’s remedies are not indicated and can often cause more harm than good. The first thing to do if you suspect you are suffering from a form of hyperhidrosis is to see a dermatology specialist, who will be able to suggest the right solution.
Returning toaxillary hyperhidrosis and botulinum, we can say that the action of this substance acts on the innervation of the axillary sweat glands, blocking the stimulus that causes them to produce sweat.
To activate this, treatment with localized botulinum infiltrations, which can be safely performed on an outpatient basis, is required. The treatment, which is virtually painless, does not involve anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.
The effects of Botox, however, are not permanent: lasting about 10 months, the treatment will need to be repeated once a year.
There are no particular side effects to report, as the treatment does no damage to the glands and is particularly recommended for treating excessive underarm sweating.
