Transdermal therapy: what it consists of and when it is recommended

There are quite a number of different pathologies that can be remedied, or at least ensure a significant reduction in the problem, by means of a transdermal carrier and the right composition of active ingredients. But let’s proceed in order.

What is transdermal delivery

It is a technique to deliver active ingredients into the tissues, regulating and nourishing them, in a completely painless and noninvasive manner. In fact, this therapy makes it possible not to use needles or syringes to administer the substances, nor does it involve the use of acids. It is a technique that reactivates the natural metabolic regeneration processes of tissues. Such conveyance results in a momentary permeability of the tissues while at the same time causing their transient tension.
How this technique works
Transdermal delivery works through the coexistence of two different processes: dermabrasion and dermoelectroporation.

  • dermabrasion. Dead surface cells that would prevent the delivery of substances to the tissues to be revitalized are removed.
  • dermoelectroporation. Light electrical pulses create tiny gaps in the cell membrane through which the molecules of the substances being carried can reach the cells.

A session ranges from 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the size of the area to be treated), but what are the steps that constitute it?

  • Preparation of a cocktail of substances, selected according to compatibility and the problem to be addressed
  • cleansing of the skin to be treated
  • Distribution of substances to the affected area through the transdermal carrier that slightly warms the skin and speeds up the absorption process

With this technique, the absorption time is shortened and the amount of substances absorbed multiplied compared with traditional therapies.

The blemishes treatable with transdermal delivery.

  • skin hypotonia
  • wrinkles
  • water retention and cellulite
  • stretch marks
  • localized adiposity
  • skin spots
  • acne scars
  • Toning (not only for cleavage or arms, but also buttocks and breasts)
  • alopecia
  • alleviation of neuralgic or muscular pain

Depending on the problem to be treated, it may be transdermal delivery of hyaluronic acid but also specific drugs, which reach the skin target in a massive dose, without passing through the bloodstream ; it is up to the physician to decide the dosage of the active ingredients to be delivered.
Already after the first session, results are visible in the treatment of filling wrinkles and lips; but also in cases of muscle hypotonia. Whereas, on the other hand, in the case of scars and stretch marks, noticeable results become apparent approximately after the third session. Appointments should be weekly and for maintenance monthly.

With transdermal delivery, scars, stretch marks and signs of aging can be greatly alleviated. But, we have already said, it is up to the specialist to select the right substances to treat different aesthetic issues. For example:

  • Wrinkles and toning: usually a solution of hyaluronic acid and vitamin C is applied.
  • Cellulite and localized adiposity: a phosphatecholine-based mix is used in these cases.
  • Alopecia: we proceed with a cocktail of substances specifically for baldness, either alopecia areata or defluvium.
  • Acne: in these cases we see what the ‘dominant aspect is and proceed with substances that act on the seborrhea or blackhead or the bacterial component, adapting the cocktail to the needs of the moment.
